JOB DESCRIPTION
This position performs skilled manual work in the operation of a variety of vehicles/equipment in the performance of daily tasks, or may specialize in the operation of specific types of vehicles/equipment. Examples of small equipment to be operated are pickup truck with trailer, multi-terrain loader with grapple rake and vibratory double drum roller. Employees in this class shall safely and skillfully operate standard vehicles and/or equipment in the performance of recurring tasks. Additionally, employees will perform light maintenance of vehicles and equipment operated.
Training and Experience
Minimum Training: High school education preferred and two years experience in vehicle and or small equipment operation, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Professional Licenses/mandatory requirements
Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
SALARY: $17.04 per hour plus benefits

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the practices applied to the safe and skillful operation and care of vehicles and equipment
- Skill in using hand tools
- Skill in the safe operation of small equipment
- Ability to learn, understand and abide by all traffic laws and County regulations pertaining to the safe operation of vehicles and equipment

Essential Functions
- Operates all types of equipment associated with the operation of the Public Works Department, including but not limited to; checks condition of truck or equipment before operating; performs light maintenance on vehicle such as checking and adding oil, fuel, water and air; changes tires; cleans and washes vehicles or equipment
- Repair streets, bridge maintenance, installing culverts, repairing driveways and the maintenance of ditches; positions in this class require performing manual labor in loading and unloading materials
- Ability to take a team work approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed and considering large organization or team goals rather than individual concerns
- Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

Work Environment
Responsible for the satisfactory and safe operation of vehicles and equipment under all types of weather conditions on paved and dirt roads. Ability to perform physical work related to the position. Majority of tasks are performed outdoors and very frequently in extreme weather conditions. Subjected to insects, noxious fumes and constant noise.
Essential Physical Skills/Demands
Visually identifies hazards to safe operation of problem areas and reports or corrects them. Work is performed independently in accordance with definite instructions from a supervisor who reviews work through observation for compliance with work schedules and instructions. Performs skilled manual work in conjunction with job assignments; operates chain saws, cement saws and various types of hand tools. Will use both hands simultaneously while standing or sitting, requires constant pushing, pulling, twisting, bending and climbing; frequent lifting of (10) ten to (50) fifty pounds. Position requires oral and written communications; involves adequate eyesight and hearing to safely perform these functions.
