JOB DESCRIPTION

This is advanced clerical library work.  An employee assigned to this classification independently performs moderately complex clerical tasks in accordance with established procedures. Employees assigned to this position may work in areas such as public services, children’s circulation, technical or other areas of the library. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level Library Assistant, Library Supervisor or Branch Manager on all but routine tasks and is reviewed through conferences and observation of results obtained. In a branch setting, this employee may function as a lead worker and be responsible for opening and closing the branch library.

Training and Experience

Minimum requirements:  High school graduation or G.E.D. and two years office or clerical work preferably in a library setting or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.

Professional Licenses/mandatory requirements

Valid Florida driver’s license preferred but not required.

SALARY: $ 15.94 per hour plus benefits

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the purpose and functions of a public library
  • Knowledge of alphabetical, numerical and library filing systems
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers
  • Ability to work without close supervision
  • Ability to make decisions within the framework of state policies and procedures
  • Ability to deal effectively with library customers in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to operate office machines such as cash register, computers, photocopiers, typewriters, calculators, telephones, fax, magnification equipment, audiovisual and other equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to relay instructions or information to others
  • Ability to learn and apply departmental procedures in a short period of time
  • Ability to handle details accurately
  • Ability to type 35 correct words per minute, preferred

Essential Functions

  • Performs circulation and other desk duties, including borrower registration, checking books in and out, collecting and recording fines and fees, and taking reserves and interlibrary loan requests
  • Explains library procedures to the public and assists users in locating materials
  • Assists in the search and recovery of library materials; conducts bibliographic searches
  • Shelves materials and reads shelves
  • Helps maintain order and decorum of library
  • Assists public in use of computers
  • Provides limited reader and reference assistance service under the direction of a Librarian
  • Performs filing and data entry, including updating computer records
  • Assists with processing library materials for circulation, including simple cataloging, routing materials and clearing book drop
  • Operates and maintains equipment, assisting public in the use of equipment as needed
  • Answers telephone and routes calls or assists as necessary with inquiries
  • Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

Non -Essential Functions

Assists with library programs. Prepares correspondence, reports and other documents as required. Delivers materials or equipment using library vehicle or personal vehicle, if necessary. Prepares displays. Performs related work as required.

Work Environment

Office/library environment but may include travel to day care centers, senior centers and other outreach locations to deliver materials or to assist with programs.

Essential Physical Skills/Demands

Ability to push and/or pull fully loaded hand carts and to load and unload materials from carts and vehicles. Extended sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, crawling, stooping, and kneeling. Ability to frequently lift, reach, bend to locate and remove or reshelve materials. Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without correction) to safely perform duties. Occasional work from a ladder or other elevated surface.
