JOB DESCRIPTION

This position performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and servicing of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment. Work in this position includes both gasoline and diesel fueled apparatus. The employee in this position makes minor repairs and performs service work on vehicles, tractors, bulldozers, road motor graders, and a wide variety of other construction and maintenance equipment. The majority of the essential functions are performed in the field rather than in the repair shop.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Experience: High School education or G.E.D. preferred and two years’ experience in maintenance and servicing of equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

PROFESSIONAL LICENSES/MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class B Driver’s License with hazard material and tanker endorsements required.

SALARY: $20.01 per hour plus benefits

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

 Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.

 Knowledge of operation and repair characteristics of a wide variety of construction equipment and similar machinery.

 Ability to diagnose problems in automotive and other public works equipment.

 Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

 Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments used by a mechanic.

 Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed and considering large organization or team goals rather than individual concerns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operates or drives a fuel service truck; performs minor repairs on light and heavy equipment; services vehicles and equipment to include changing oil and filters, hydraulic oil, ties and antifreeze; fueling equipment; greasing and lubing equipment; replacing batteries, worn belts, hoses and grader blades. Prepares daily records and reports on work accomplished. Must be able to visually identify hazards to safe operation of problem areas and report or correct them. Work is performed independently in accordance with definite instructions from a supervisor who reviews work through observation for compliance with work schedules and instructions. Performs other task as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Responsible for the satisfactory and safe operation of vehicles and equipment under all types of weather conditions on paved and dirt roads. Ability to perform physical work related to the position. Majority of tasks are performed outdoors and very frequently in extreme weather conditions. Subjected to insects, noxious fumes and constant noise.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS/DEMANDS

Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Position requires oral and written communications; involves adequate eyesight and hearing to safely perform these functions. This position requires climbing, pushing, pulling reaching overhead, bending, kneeling and crawling. These functions require use of both hands simultaneously while in various positions of walking, standing, stooping and sitting while performing essential duties.
