GulfCoast Financial Presents: Where the Heart Is Newsletter for Feburary

A Happy Heart is a Healthy Heart

February is all about love. We see red and pink hearts on candies, cards, clothing, home decor, and yes, even on toilet paper. Valentine's Day celebrates loving others and being loved by others. Maybe it's time to change things up a bit and celebrate loving yourself. Be your own Valentine.

February is Heart Health Month. Approximately 1,202,000 Floridians have coronary heart disease according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. While not all heart disease is preventable, living a heart healthy lifestyle is always the right choice.

Heart-healthy living involves understanding your risk, making choices, and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting heart disease, including coronary heart disease, the most common type. Coronary and other types of heart disease cause heart attacks, but by taking preventive measures, you can lower your risk of developing heart disease and also improve your overall health and well-being.

How to be your own best Valentine:

  • Understand Your Risks: Have an honest talk with your doc
  • Get Your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Checked
  • Choose Heart Healthy Foods
  • Aim for a Healthy Weight: It is never too late to start.
  • Manage Stress (yes really, the NHLB said that.)
  • Get Physical: Everyone has a beginning, start small and work your way up!
  • Quit Smoking: This is a tough one for so many. Do not be ashamed to ask for help from your doctor or your loved ones. Also, talk with your doctor if you vape. There is scientific evidence that nicotine and flavorings found in vaping products can damage your heart and lungs.
  • Get Enough Good Quality Sleep
  • Be Mindful of Your Mental Health: A growing body of research shows good mental health can improve heart health and reduce cardiovascular risks, while poor mental health can increase the risk of heart disease, according to a new scientific report.(American Heart Association)

GulfCoast Friends!

A big hearty hello from Jack and his beautifully soulful golden eyes!

He is a 4-year-old altered male American Bull Terrier who loves being outside and playing with other dogs. When this energetic boy first gets out to the play yard, he gets a case of the zoomies, wagging wiggles and happy tail!!!!! He loves toys that he can run with and his canine pals should be able to keep up. Jack prefers to dine alone when it comes to animal friends, however, his humans are welcome dining company.

To schedule a meeting with your future canine or feline pal (...or BOTH), please contact the Lake City Humane Society at 386-752-3191 or www.lakecityhumane.org.
