JOB DESCRIPTION

This position performs skilled work in the operation of a motor grader. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe operation of automotive vehicles and mobile motorized equipment in the daily operations of the Public Works Department and for light maintenance of vehicles and equipment operated.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School Education or G.E.D. preferred and three years’ experience in the operation of a motor grader, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

PROFESSIONAL LICENSES/MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License required.

SCHEDULE:: TRADITIONAL FULL-TIME, 40 HOURS PER WEEK, MONDAY - FRIDAY, OCCASIONAL OVERTIME

SALARY: $19.01 per hour plus benefits

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the practices applied to the safe and skillful operation and care of vehicles and equipment.

Ability to learn, understand and abide by all traffic laws and County Regulation pertaining to the safe operation of vehicles and equipment.

Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions

Ability to communicate with fellow employees and the general public.

Ability to take a team work approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operates and drives a motor grader; checks condition of motor grader before operating; performs light maintenance on motor grader such as checking and adding oil, fuel, water and air; changes tires; cleans and washes motor grader. This position includes grading roads; spreading dirt and lime rock; knowledge in the safe operation of a motor grader. Must be able to learn, understand and abide by all Public Works Department Standard Operating Procedures, Rules and Regulations and County Personnel Policies and Procedures. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Visually identifies hazards to safe operation of problem areas and reports or corrects them. Work is performed independently in accordance with definite instructions from a supervisor who reviews work through observation for compliance with work schedules and instructions.

NON -ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs related work as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Responsible for the satisfactory and safe operation of vehicles and equipment under all types of weather conditions on paved and dirt roads. Ability to perform physical work related to the position. Majority of tasks are performed outdoors and frequently in extreme weather conditions. Subject to insects, noxious fumes and constant noise.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS/DEMANDS

Will use both hands simultaneously while standing or sitting, requires constant pushing, pulling, twisting, bending and climbing; frequent lifting of ten (10) to fifty (50) pounds. Position requires oral and written communications; involves adequate eyesight and hearing to safely perform these functions.
